Siemens Successfully Participates in GMI 2006 IMS Interoperability Testing Sponsored by the MultiService Forum
WALTHAM, Mass — October 26, 2006— Siemens Networks LLC today announced its successful participation in Global MSF Interoperability 2006 (GMI 2006) where it demonstrated the interworking of its core IMS@vantage IP-Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) components during a two-week period of testing in a real-world, global network environment. That environment connected five of the world's top carriers – Verizon, BT, KT, NTT and Vodafone – plus the University of New Hampshire, using IP-managed networks and the Internet.
GMI 2006 test objectives were to validate the MultiService Forum's (MSF) Release 3 Implementation Agreements for the evolution of first-generation, softswitched-based VoIP networks towards an IMS-based service delivery architecture. Siemens successfully participated in scores of test cases from all five GMI IMS interoperability scenarios, including IMS on-net services, IMS off-net services and interconnect (MSF, PSTN and Internet), IMS value-add services, IMS service roaming, IMS optimal routing and QoS (bandwidth management). The company's strict adherence to latest IMS standards set forth by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and ETSI TISPAN enabled Siemens to open its IMS core platform to such critical reference points as Gm, Mw, Mg, ISC, Sh, Gq, Ro and others.
To take part, Siemens brought to Verizon's Waltham, Mass. network laboratories its core IMS@vantage platform components, including the @vantage CMS-8200 Home Subscriber Server (HSS), the @vantage CFX-5000 Call Session Control Function (CSCF) server and the SURPASS hiQ 4200 Voice Feature server. The flexible packaging functionality of the @vantage CFX-5000 for any of the 3GPP-specified CSCF logical functions (Proxy, Interrogating and Serving) enabled support for the five GMI IMS interoperability scenarios. Siemens also included in its GMI 2006 IMS configuration a carrier-grade Navitas ENUM/DNS server from Nominum®. All of the Siemens IMS solution products run on carrier-grade, commercial off-the-shelf technology from Sun Microsystems®.
Successful interoperability was demonstrated with Siemens' current partners Acme Packet® and IP Unity®, as well as with other vendors' IMS products including Empirix®, Leapstone Systems, NexTone Communications®, Operax, Spirent® Communications, among others. With the U.S. government’s National Communications System, Siemens demonstrated its ability to support priority voice and priority video sessions, which can be used during national emergencies. Interworking to other IMS domains and legacy softswitch solutions was also demonstrated and highlighted the smooth transition of the MSF softswitch architecture to IMS.
"With our commitment to open standards, GMI 2006 has been a terrific opportunity for us to showcase the interoperability and maturity of the Siemens IMS core platform and solutions ' said Harald Braun, president and COO, Siemens Networks LLC. "After all, interoperability is one of the guiding principles behind the IMS architecture as it is across the entire Siemens IMS@vantage product portfolio.

About GMI 2006
GMI 2006 will bring together dozens of carriers and vendors to test the interoperability of IMS-based
infrastructure components in a real-world setting. Providing a test-bed for the full spectrum of hardware,
processes and services needed to assemble an effective next-generation delivery platform, GMI 2006 is
designed to validate MSF Release 3 Implementation Agreements. These cover a wide range of topics
including roaming across multiple network types (including cellular and WiFi), QoS issues (including
session border control and bandwidth management), and interoperability with 3GPP release 4.
Five of the world's top carriers – BT, KT, NTT, Verizon and Vodafone and a world-class test facility UNHIOL
– will host the event to provide world-class networked test facilities spanning three continents.
Comprising a massive 'real network' trial of the MSF IMS-compatible (IP Multimedia System) Release 3
architecture, this event is critically important to any carrier or vendor committed to building or
implementing infrastructure elements compatible with IMS.
